STAFF HIGHLIGHT
Frannie Peabody Center has chosen Kristin Espey, a case manager for Frannie Peabody Center to highlight for this Annual Report.

Kristin is a native of Portland and was hired five years ago as a case manager to do outreach and provide case management services to clients.  She works with clients in the prison system and is closely connected with area corrections and homeless providers.  She works tirelessly on behalf of her clients, providing support, referrals and guidance to each person, and always treating her clients with dignity and respect.

Kristin began her career at the local plasma center, where she gave HIV results to patients.  It was during her tenure at Maine Medical Center that she began to develop relationships with patients and cultivated her interest in HIV/AIDS.

“In the early days there was such an incredible stigma attached to HIV/AIDS,” says Kristin, remembering when HIV/AIDS patients were housed in an isolated area of the hospital where she and other medical providers had to double their gloves and wear masks while caring for them. “I still get recognized on the street as the lady who used to draw my labs and took the time to treat patients as human beings”.

“I worked alongside a young female client in her early twenties, who has since passed away.  As a child, she and her family moved away from Maine to another state where her family received such negative treatment she wasn’t even allowed to enroll in school.  They returned to Maine and to open arms.  Her picture hangs in my office.  To me, she is the face of HIV/AIDS and the way it affects us all”.

We at Frannie Peabody Center are privileged to work with Kristin; we commend her dedication and commitment to her clients.  “Kristin is an invaluable member of the Frannie Peabody Center team.  It is because of staff members like Kristin that so many of our clients live healthy lives” says Alice Caswell, Kristin’s Case Management Supervisor.
